Madison, The Grouch, Mayer

As per the usual, I've seen very few of the nominated (for anything) films. so my reactions are pretty limited. As in:
  • Really would have liked to see WALL-E get a Best Picture nomination, and find it a little cliche that the surprise nominee is a Holocaust film.
  • I haven't seen The Changeling, but find myself very much doubting Angelina Jolie deserves a nomination.
  • Very nice to see Robeert Downey Jr. and Heath Ledger nominated as Best Supporting Actor. Not sure who is better, frankly.
  • Thrilled to see WALL-E get screenplay, score, and song love.
  • One day I will understand the difference between Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. That day is not today.
  • Only three Song nominees? What's up with that? As has been noted elsewhere, Jason Segel deserved a nod for his Dracula song from Sarah Marshall, at the least.
  • I did not know that Danny Elfman scored Milk. Am very curious to hear that.
  • Why do Special Effects and Makeup always have three nominees only?

Until Whenever

One award is for the editing of sound, the other is for the mixing of sound. I can't believe I had to explain this to you. (rolls eyes)

I also don't understand why there are only three songs nominated, and especially, if there are only three slots, why two of them are from the same film! That always, always bugs me, even if the songs are from a film I like. My only consolation in this is that, given how movies with more than one song nominated have failed to win in the past few years, "Down to Earth" basically has a clear shot to win.

As for mixing and editing, the way I see it (which may or may not be true) is that sound mixing is the guy who pushes those levels up and down, deciding what gets to be loud and what gets to be quiet and like that.
Sound editing is really sound effects, getting everything to sound like it's supposed (and in an animated film, creating those sounds from scratch).

Jaq: Eureka!

ZBE: Not having seen Slumdog, this is a wholly unfair statement, but I would LOVE it if it split the vote and Gabriel won.
